Exercycles: buy the classic home fitness device!

Exercycles are simple fitness machines for at-home cardio exercise. Together with treadmills, elliptical cross trainers, and rowing machines, they are a basic pillar of classics endurance training. Exercycles have been on the market for a long time and have come a long way since then. They often include many exercise programmes to provide additional motivation throughout the workout. Furthermore, they also provide many advantages when it comes to fitness training in the home:
  • Endurance and cardiovascular training
  • Easy on the joints
  • Easy to use
  • Require little space
  • Workout independent from the weather and time of day
  • Good for beginners

Exercycles: some buying advice

The resistance system

The resistance of exercycles is produced by an interaction between a flywheel mass and a braking system. The flywheel mass provides a concentric run: generally, the bigger the mass the smoother the pedalling motion. Some home fitness machines have a lighter flywheel – here a smoother concentric run can be generated through a higher rotation speed.

There are exercise bikes with different braking systems — i.e., a shoe brake as on a bicycle. Here, extremely high resistance forces can be produced though the wear is higher. Finer adjustments are possible with a magnetic braking system. The flywheel mass and brake do not touch each other, so there is nearly no wear from proper use.

Comfort and convenience during stamina training

The computer and training position are decisive for the convenience of using an exercycle. More training programmes mean more workout diversity and thus more motivation! It is also important that you have a comfortable seating position. The saddle of an exercycle may be adjustable in horizontal and vertical position. It is important to find a comfortable seating position so you can enjoying an effective workout without putting unnecessary stress on your joints.

Last but not least: What's the difference between a basic exercycle and a cycle ergometer (exercise bike)?

The difference between an exercycle and a cycle ergometer is their ability to accurately measure and/or control the output in watts. Cycle ergometers measure pedalling output in watts, while exercycles have only very basic resistance/load levels. Many ergometers also include programmes to limit the watt output by adjusting their resistance levels: if the user pedals faster, resistance is decreased / if slower, resistance is increased to maintain a steady overall output and not exceed a set wattage. Thus cycle ergometers are often used in therapy, for example: a person may receive instructions from a physician not to overexert themselves. Thanks to the easy operation, both exercycles and cycle ergometers are ideal for daily training at home.
